Surface bound states in the continuum in Dyakonov structures

چکیده
Surface bound states in the continuum (SBICs) have been found to occur diverse settings, but so far always at interface of nonhomogeneous media, such as discrete lattices or periodic systems. Here, we show that they can also exist homogeneous resulting unique SBICs. Specifically, that, contrary general belief, leaky Dyakonov between materials exhibit opposite signs anisotropy. In addition, properly breaking anisotropy symmetry leads formation both guided and SBICs embedded within continuum. A direct implication our finding is possibility create a whole new class metamaterials.

Surface bound states in the continuum.
We introduce a novel concept of surface bound states in the continuum, i.e., surface modes embedded into the linear spectral band of a discrete lattice. We suggest an efficient method for creating such surface modes and the local bounded potential necessary to support the embedded modes. We demonstrate that the surface embedded modes are structurally stable, and the position of their eigenvalue...
متن کاملBound States in the Continuum in double layer structures
We have theoretically investigated the reflectivity spectrums of single- and double-layer photonic crystal slabs and the dielectric multilayer stack. It is shown that light can be perfectly confined in a single-layer photonic crystal slab at a given incident angle by changing the thickness, permittivity or hole radius of the structure. With a tunable double-layer photonic crystal slab, we demon...
متن کاملBulk and surface bound states in the continuum
We examine bulk and surface bound states in the continuum (BIC), that is, square-integrable, localized modes embedded in the linear spectral band of a discrete lattice including interactions to first and second nearest neighbors. We suggest an efficient method for generating such modes and the local bounded potential that supports the BIC, based on the pioneering Wigner–von Neumann concept. It ...
متن کامل1 Bound States in the Continuum
Bound states in the continuum are waves that, defying conventional wisdom, remain localized even though they coexist with a continuous spectrum of radiating waves that can carry energy away. Their existence was first proposed in quantum mechanics and, being a general wave phenomenon, later identified in electromagnetic, acoustic, and water waves. They have been studied in a wide variety of mate...
متن کاملFloquet bound states in the continuum
Quantum mechanics predicts that certain stationary potentials can sustain bound states with an energy buried in the continuous spectrum of scattered states, the so-called bound states in the continuum (BIC). Originally regarded as mathematical curiosities, BIC have found an increasing interest in recent years, particularly in quantum and classical transport of matter and optical waves in mesosc...
